Legal Literacy FAQ
Have questions about legal literacy, community workshops, or how Faith & Justice Support Services can help? Our FAQ page explains who we serve, what we offer, and how our work supports Latino, immigrant, Spanish-speaking, and underserved communities through education, dignity, and empowerment.
What is Legal Literacy?
1
Legal literacy means understanding basic legal rights, responsibilities, legal terms, and legal systems so people can make informed decisions and know where to seek help. It does not mean becoming a lawyer — it means having enough knowledge to feel more prepared, confident, and empowered when facing legal or civic issues.
Why is Legal Literacy important?
2
Legal literacy is important because many people are expected to navigate courts, paperwork, government systems, and legal decisions without ever being taught how these systems work. We also recognize that communities of color have often been excluded from access to legal knowledge, resources, and fair treatment. When people understand their rights and options, they are better prepared to ask questions, seek help, avoid misinformation, and advocate for themselves and their families with dignity. Faith & Justice Support Services exists to help our communities move from intimidation to empowerment.
Does Faith & Justice Support Services provide legal advice?
3
No. Faith & Justice Support Services provides legal literacy education, community resources, workshops, and general information. We do not provide legal advice, legal representation, or attorney-client services. For advice about a specific legal matter, we encourage individuals to contact a licensed attorney or qualified legal aid organization. We can recommend some of our partners to help you if you need legal counsel.
